Snuff
Snuff got together in 1986 to "take the piss
out of" the kind of radio pop acts who take themselves a bit
too seriously. Soon, however, their light-hearted thrash pub-punk
version of Jimi Hendix's Purple Haze was, ironically, earning them
serious attention, and they have been touring the world, playing
to beer-fueled singalong crowds ever since.

The Ventures
with special guest Nokie Edwards
The Ventures may be one of those bands who have
been more or less forgotten in the States, but, being appreciated
in Japan to the tune of over 40 million records, why would they
care? They hit upon a winning formula early on - covering hit songs
(from whatever genre or theme tickled them) in their breezy, laid-back,
instrumental surf-guitar style - and still play pretty much the
same way today, 40 years on. Their line-up now includes Leon, son
of the late Mel Taylor, on drums. "Special guest" Nokie
Edwards is actually a long-time (but not current) member.

Hoobastank
Having started out in 1998 with the unlikely sounding
self-financed single They Sure Don't Make Basketball Shorts Like
They Used To, it's almost surprising they were ever taken seriously
at all. But the college grunge pop-rock kids lapped them up, and
a major label deal was signed. If a weird hybrid of Weezer, Incubus
and Def Leppard sounds good, then see them.

Haven
Haven are the epitome of the UK's current rock
revival - unashamedly rock (in a way that would have led straight
to the bargain bin a few years ago) but with melodies that echo
the 60s and indie 80s. They may be a bit safe in their songwriting,
but singer Gary Briggs' oyster-smooth Jeff Buckley-esque voice makes
them worthy.

Chicago
A full time horn section was not exactly all the
rage amongst rock bands when the Chicago Transit Authority formed
in 1967. But with their blend of rock, pop, jazz, easy listening,
and unforgettable tunes, they proved themselves right - becoming
America's second most successful rock band of all time, second only
to the Beach Boys. Chicago are living legends. Go see them.

Yes
Many old bands play in Japan because they've been
forgotten elsewhere, but Yes, now back to their "classic"
lineup of Wakeman, Squire, Anderson, White, and Howe seem as popular
as ever and whether you like their brand of anal retentive prog
rock or not, you have to marvel at their virtuosity.
