Cafe Continue

A hip hotspot in already trendy Ame-mura, this cafe has a built-in advantage that puts it quite literally ahead of the competition — it's never closed.

Open 24-7, the appropriately named Cafe Continue, makes sure it stays busy by making sure there's no excuse not to go there.

Short of cash? Not a problem: the food dishes start at under ¥500. Work antisocial hours? So do the staff at Continue, the poor things, and all so you can satisfy a craving for, well, whatever you'd like, at whatever ridiculous hour you'd like it.

Going out with someone who'd like to eat/drink like a horse/fish, while all you want is a skinny latte and a long chat? The menu covers both light and hearty ends of the food and drink spectrum and you won't get stared at by the waiter if you don't order enough to pay off his credit card bill (the staff do, it is true, look a tad too trendy to be the saving type).

If you are after a light meal, the scrambled eggs on toast (¥350) comes recommended, as do the salads (from ¥600) if calories concern.

The most popular dish however is the generously proportioned Om-rice (¥680) — chicken and mushroom fried rice, wrapped in a fluffy omlette. Significant sustenance can also be had with the 'A' teishoku (¥900), consisting of hamburg, fried chicken, rice and miso soup and best consumed with Continue's enduringly fruity frozen mixed juice (¥700).

The drinks menu, alcohol-based and not, is comprehensive too and that, combined with some well-chosen background music, makes Continue a good pre or post-clubbing pit stop (clubbers looking for suggestions for the night ahead might want to browse the flyers near the door).

It may not satisfy everyone. It is, after all, very much in the 'trendy Japanese cafe' mould — all gleaming aluminium, light-coloured walls and minimalist interior cool — but it comes pretty close and is, at last, a place as 24 hours as you are. Drop by. Anytime.
