Alexander the Great
East-West Cultural Contacts
from Greece to Japan

10/18 - 12/21

The anabasis of Alexander the Great of Macedonia (B.C. 334-323) is a well-known historical fact. This anabasis transmitted Greek art, which was highly developed at that time, from the east coast of the Mediterranean sea to Central Asia and India. This influence reached Japan in the Far East via the Silk Road. With the cooperation of The British Museum and other renowned museums, this exhibition shows a variety of fine art from 7th century B.C. to 13 century. You can see and enjoy how Greek art influenced the Orient in ancient days.

Francisco De Goya

11/08 - 12/03

To celebrate their 20th anniversary, Himeji City Museum will exhibit Goya’s four greatest work throught the end of the year. Francisco Goya is widely known as "The Father of Modern Art.,"

He began his painting career just after the late Baroque period. Much of his artwork would become extremely influential on 19th century artists. Two trends dominated the art of his contradictory; they actually were not. Together they represented the reaction against previous conceptions of art and the desire for a new form of expression.

In order to understand the scope of Goya's art, and to appreciate the principles which governed his development and tremendous versatility, it is essential to realize that his work extended over a period of more than 60 years, for he continued to draw and paint until he was 82 years old. His strength lies in that he knew the rules of artistic expression before he broke them for a new style.
