Bologna Children's Book Fair — Bologna Fiera Del Libro Per Ragazzi

Until Sep.26

The world's leading annual children's publishing event was held again in April in Bologna, Italy. 2004 was the exhibition's 41st anniversary. The fair includes an exhibition that offers a juried selection of outstanding talent, both emerging and established, from all over the world. In 2003, nearly 150 artists were selected from over 2800 entries. Combined with the many illustrators who visit the fair to show their latest portfolios to publishers, Bologna has become the single most important source of information about contemporary illustrators. This year, 2,721 illustrators sent in their works from over 62 countries. 543 illustrators were from Japan and 16 of them received awards for their work. This year, the Otani Memorial Museum will exhibit 500 of these works from the fair. In addition, 30 works from Dekune Iku, the 2003 BIB (Biennial of Illustrations Bratislava 2003 (Slovakia) Grand Prix Award winner, will be on display.

Flemish and Dutch Paintings from the Collection of the Kunsth Isches Museum Wien

Until Oct.11

From the collections of Kunst Isches Museum Wien (Art History Museum in Vienna), this exhibition focuses on 16th and 17th-century paintings from the Netherlands and Flanders. 58 masterpieces by the great artists of the time (Rubens, Van Dyck, Rembrandt, Vermeer and others) will be on display. Especially the works by Vermeer are extremely valuable as only around 30 items remain today. Among them, The Artist's Studio is regarded as the crown jewel. The delicate touch and the translucent colors are remarkable despite the passage of time. It is the first time this world renowned painting has been exhibited in Japan.

The exhibition also includes advertising posters created in the international cities of Shanghai and Hong Kong during the 1920s and 1930s, and paintings drawn as political propaganda during the People's Republic of China period.

Aug.17-Sep.20

Recently new expressions emerging from Brazil are attracting the attention of the world. This exhibi-tion introduces contemporary Brazilian art and demonstrates its unique history and social conditions. The exhibition introduces three seminal artists, Tarcila do Amaral from the 1920s, Lygia Clark and Mira Schendel from the 1960s, together with contemporary artists, Miguel Rio Branco, Adriana Valejao, Rivane Neuenschwander and Brigida Baltar. The show is themed on 'the body', and takes the form of dialogues between the old and new generations.
