If Derrick May is the original Detroit techno pioneer, Carl Craig is probably the most important figure in the second generation of Detroit DJs, along with Jeff Mills, Kenny Larkin et al. Not only a DJ/producer, he's the owner of the brilliant label (Planet E), a remixer (worked with The Orb, Dave Angel, System 7 etc)
and has produced a number of masterpieces under the aliases of Psyche, 69, Paperclip People and Innerzone Orchestra. He puts the essence of many different genres, like jazz, house and soul, onto a techno base to create his own innovative style. Come and feel the groove from Detroit!

AFRIKA BAMBAATAA JAPAN TOUR 2004

A long awaited hip hop godfather, Afrika Bambaataa, is finally coming to Japan. Born and brought up in the South Bronx, he established the famous hip hop collective The Zulu Nation which included De La Soul, Queen Latifah, and A Tribe Called Quest, among others, under the umbrella of his eternal ideals — Peace, Unity, Love and Having Fun through music. He produced the all-time-hip hop-classic Planet Rock in 1982: a track with a perfect balance of hip hop beats and synthesizer sounds. This electro-funk masterpiece influenced everything from hip hop to soul and even techno/house. An aging legend and not one often in Kansai, this might be your last chance to catch this bit of hip hop history live.

Future Grooves, Final Scratch

Recent stagnancy in the entertainment/fashion worlds has resulted in everyone placing a collective ear to the ground to listen intensely for any new tremors that seem remotely groundbreaking. From large multinationals to bedroom creators, the hunt is on to define the century.

The rampant crosspollination we have seen in recent years that has offered us unlimited options and choices, however has started to become a little clichéed, no? Mergers, collaborations and fusions have become an all too familiar occurrence these days, almost to the point where its hard to find something truly original. One positive thing to come out of this movement, however, is an increased sense of community, an ease with finding like minded people.

Here in Japan, a gathering of like-minded creators, is blazing the path to finding the "next big thing" by forming communities facilitated by workshops and guest speakers. Salem Innovation Sessions are creative meetings held quarterly both in Osaka and Tokyo to showcase emerging technologies and artists in the hope to spur imagination and build the network of its creative attendees.
Richie Hawtin, minimal techno extraordinaire, was the last guest to talk about his methods and inspiration to a crowd of eager listeners at the invitation only event. He offered insight into his thoughts and theories, talked about his past but mostly displayed his skill in combining new technology within a rigid, almost timeless framework.

It was clear from the outset that this combination is made special because it is done for a purpose not merely for the sake of it.
Final Scratch, the system he uses to perform, is a product that offers both professionals and amateur DJs true control over the digital realm. By using any standard turntable/mixer setup, a DJ can now manipulate digital music the way they have always done ... by hand and vinyl. By loading any digital audio file onto a PC, the computer now has become the DJs record box. No more lugging around crates of heavy acetate. Something that will make the DJ happy but is already starting to increase the heat on vinyl manufacturers Final Scratch allows mixing of digital audio files, controlled by any DJ turntable in combination with its software, a Scratch Amp interfacing box, and three specially designed vinyl records.

The software allows you to save audio files in various play lists and to assign them to either turntable. It also provides a visual representation of the music on screen, needle position for each audio file, and remaining time of each audio file. Through the wonders of modern science you can pick up the needle, then drop it back down anywhere on the record and the digital file responds as if it is right there, ingrained in the grooves of the spinning disk. The special vinyl records included, contain digital information used to mix the digital files. All mixing is done directly from the turntables, including pitch shifting, cuing, spinning up and down, and even scratching. The records can also be used in combination with traditional analog record as well. The Scratch Amp acts as a interface between the turntables and the computer. It processes the signal from the Final Scratch records and sends it to the computer via USB with no feeling of delay or skip.
