The 56th Annual Shoso-in Treasures

Thru Nov. 15

This year marks the 56th annual Exhibition of Shoso-in Treasures, one of the great traditions of autumn in the ancient Japanese capital of Nara. The 2004 exhibition features seventy-five works from the Shoso-in, perhaps the world's greatest reposi-tory of eighth century East Asian art. Of the seventy-five, twelve are being exhibited to the public for the first time ever.

Outstanding furnishings and household items include an armrest covered with nishiki silk, and the exquisitely decorated tablemat made of nishiki silk are some of the more extravagant exhibits.

Buddhist implements include the delicate mosaic offering box, mould for buddhist figures and basket work of laced beads which some say resembles the Buddhist sign for the universe. The priest Ganjin's letter for borrowing Buddhist sutras is a simple but captivating work of calligraphy.

Gems of Tokugawa Art Museum — Lavish Life of the Inner Palace

Thru Dec. 5

The wives of feudal lords led an extravagant life in their inner palaces. Their extravagant way of life can be imagined from the lavishly decorated furniture and colorful clothes.

This exhibition provides the visitor with a chance to re-live such luxuries through the display of dowry furniture, games, rolled paintings and calligraphy inherited by the Owari Tokugawa family, second highest in its rank to the Tokugawa Shogun family in pedigree. This is the cream of the crop of the feudal culture from the early modern ages.

MSSOHKAN
"Illusion, Purification/Fusion"
Thru Dec. 10

For Yuri Nagawara and Akira Komoto, the buzzword "collaboration" is not some-thing new nor a consequence of artistic struggles. It is something they have been engaged in over many past years, while respectively pursuing their own passion for artistic expressions.
This exhibition is an occasion wherein their artistic biorthym and expressive parabolas once again overlap to create a new equilibrium and synergy

Using such media as photography, site-specific installation, etching and painting they seek to challenge the conventional perception of "seeing" itself, by materializing the conceptual time, space and other physical view-points connoted in the natural land-scapes. Whether the "harmonious conflicts" among the exhibited works at MSSOHKAN will leave room for deli-berate imperfection still remains to be seen, but if so, only when a viewer stands vis-à-vis the atmosphere will the picture will be complete.
