System 7
System 7 is the psychedelic
techno duo Steve Hillage (electric guitar) and Miquette Giraudy
(synthesizer). Both were members of the old psychedelic rock band
Gong. Kansai Scene caught up them after their enjoyable gig on Oct.
10th at Mother Hall, pro-moting their album Encantado, released
here on Beat Records.
 KS:
What does System 7 mean?
S: In Gong we had a special feeling for “7”. We asked
Virgin for the Catalogue number “777”. “System”
comes from French slang “System D” (from “De Merd”
— get out of the shit) meaning, “get by, survive”.
In 1990 we read that Apple were updating their OS to System 7, so
it seemed the perfect techno name. In the US we changed our name
to “777” not because Apple wouldn't let us use it, but
because a rock band there was already called System 7.
KS: Tell us about the new album.
S: It was inspired from a trip to Mexico, where we've performed.
The picture is a shamanic yarn painting from the Huichol tribe.
The title was inspired by a feeling we had from the ancient lake
in Coba — a magical Mayan pyramid site. We were told, “you
are feeling the spirits of our ancestors. They are encantado …
We are all encantado.” —
We're all enchanted.
It captivated the music coming through us. Enchanted means trance.
In France they say enchante (Enchanted to meet you. You charm me
… I am with you in spirit.) We are together “in chant”
— in the same song.
This is more dance music orientated than previous albums —
a powerful weapon to lift people up. This is our way to find a coherent
response to the negativity and endless problems in the world, and
at the same time we are trying to do it together (enchante!)
KS: Do techno and progressive house audiences
react differently to your music?
S: This album is between the Progressive House & Psychedelic
Trance. Psy-trance fans will like the slower tracks, and Progressive
House fans will like the quicker tracks. James Holden and the Swedish
group Sonkite are similar. We know the scene. We started in '89
towards the end of the acid house revolu-tion. Then there was House,
acid house, and techno. There wasn't the same separation of genres
we have now. It's all one family
and there should be respect between the different types.
KS: Any music you don't like?
S: Some psychedelic trance heads dis things if its not pure psy-trance.
Psychedelic means having a wide vision. How can they say what psychedelic
means whilst having such a narrow vision?
M: Something can be crap one day and great another. Tastes change.
KS: Which records changed your life?
S&M: Strings of Life, Night of the Jaguar (Aztec Mystic), Sueno
Latino 89, which sampled E2E4 by Manuel Göttsching and Ash
Ra Temple (a German Psychedelic band).
KS: What has been your favorite gig?
S&M: Miajima Sacred Music Festival.
KS: You describe this album as “techno-shamanism”
Do you have Shamanic beliefs?
M: Future development will rid our addiction to codified beliefs.
Shamanic tools develop our skills and knowledge to produce the best
possible experience.
S: Religions freak out as science becomes more powerful. Different
belief systems around the world are freaking out at each other.
“Techno-Shamanism” — the total package of thought
and energy — is our attempt to resolve differences.
KS: What is the significance of water in your
music?
M: In the island of Cozumel, Mexico there are walls of yellow fish
— it's beautiful. Scuba diving is like yoga. You breath in
and you go up, out and you go down. It's good for the health. The
track “Octupussy” is named after the Bond film with underwater
creatures. We're System 007!
S: Water helps everyone. We're going to a hot spring tomorrow. We
wouldn't come to Japan without going to an onsen!

Super Amazing feat. Zero7
The amazing U.K. soul/downbeat unit Zero7,
whom I consider my personal best live act at this year's FUJI ROCK
FESTIVAL, are finally making their way to Osaka. Their first album
Simple Things (2001) stands as a bible figure to all chill-out
music lovers and their long-waited second album When It Falls,
was just released in early 2004. Although they will not be playing
live this time, their staple and mind-blowing combination of laid-back,
soul, acid jazz and funk tracks is sure to make all guests fall
to musical euphoria. Demus, the sound engineer of Zero7 and a member
of the fine jazz unit Two Banks of Four, will also be DJing
as well. So come along to enjoy the true nature and beauty of electric
soul music.
