Road scholar
Fresh from the South American Creamfields, where
he performed alongside Jeff Mills and Erick Morillo, Darren Emerson
descended
on ATC Hall Saturday the 27th of November ready to show all before
him the lessons learnt from such expansive planar excursions. With
energy belying the jetlag and fatigue of intense touring, Mr Emerson
wrote the book on how to get your body rockin, right there in front
of 6,000 eager Electraglide pupils. Expressing the similarities
between the Japanese crowd and their South American brothers and
sisters, it was clear he was glad to be back in Nihon after a three-year
hiatus.
Unbeknownst to many, Darren's lessons in groove
actually started at age 3, in Hornchurch, where he would sit in
his room and choose 45s by their colour (rather than their incomprehensible
jacket scribblings) to throw down on the single deck given to him
by his forward thinking parents. Obviously lectured by the Essex
Soul Scene from this early age he continued to analyze the writings
of everyone from Arthur Baker and Co. to Grandmaster Flash and The
Wrecking Crew. At the age of 14 he received his first set of real
decks and by 16 he was already out preaching to the masses, by means
of stylus and vinyl, the language he would go on to help found …

Fondly remembering his first gig in the South
End, a show for his older brother's mates, young Professor Emerson
quickly moved into residencies at Limelights and the Milkbar, regularly
DJed alongside fellow alumni, Paul Oakenfold and Johnny Walker (Founder
of the Balearic Beat) and quickly became the authority on dance
floor mechanics. Well-read and still very young his wisdom was sought
not only outside London, but eventually outside Europe proper.
While back on home soil, taking a short break
from hectic life on the road, he was introduced by a mutual friend
to Rick Smith and Karl Hyde … The good book, Underworld, was
thus (re)written and Darren spent the next 10 years constantly touring
and recording as one third of, arguably, the best electronic group
in history. During this period he still found time to (sleep on
occasion as well as) perform solo all over the globe.
 In
1994 he launched his own label, Underwater Records (you work it
out!) to start spreading the words yet unspoken to sonic students
the world over, setting in place working relationships with far
too many disciples to list here. Interesting to note, Underwater's
first release was a track called Anthem by an Icelandic group called
T World. For those of you who have done your homework T World are
now known as GusGus, creating a perfect circle, said group's last
album was recently released on Underwater, neat huh? Even more evidence
that the well-travelled Prof. Emerson, has the world spinning on
the same axis as his records is the soon-to-be-released track, Glow,
by none other than Arthur Baker himself in collaboration with Tim
from Ash. With Underwater Episode 3 selling well and a very tight
group in the stable it's easy for us, less-studious types, to be
educated about the future of dance music via this label's roster.
Ask the man himself what the future holds, however, and you will
receive as many answers as there are stamps in his passport, not
surprising considering the depth of this aural manifesto. A little
probing revealed plans to record a live album. By LIVE I mean live
instrumentation, with some very accomplished musicians at the helm…

Tune label has finally made their little logo legit by collaborating
with International Supervillian DJ Kentaro. This guy, born with
turntables instead of hands and speakers instead of buttchecks,
is the official World Champion of the DMC World Final scratch competition.
Never heard of the DMC World Final? Don't worry about it. It just
means that this tiny, little, black-eyed, sideways wearing cap ninja
kicked everyone else's ass using his god given freakishly fast yet
soft and nimble itty-bitty vinyl scratching fingers. If you get
a chance check out his French manicure!
Other members of Ninja Tune squad will be joining
the holy DJ Kentaro at Club Karma for a mix CD release party. The
music will be breakbeat, hip-hop, egg drop, scratch, scratch &
sniff, sniff & gag, drum and base, and according to unofficial
rumors a Justin Timberlake look-a-like will be handcuffed in the
bathroom accepting punches for charity.
