Healing?
Anyone can do it!
Healing ability is something
many people believe to be an innate gift for the privileged few
but KS discovers anyone can do it!
Reiki is a method of awakening and strength-ening the body's self-healing
process. It is not attached to any religion or specific belief system
at all and anyone can learn to do it. Reiki practitioners are able
to allow universal life energy the chi all around us
to travel through them and out of their palms.
In this way, they can pass the energy on to reactivate the natural
healing process we all possess but which often lies dormant. It
is effective in treating both physical and psychological problems.
Reiki, now quite popular in the West, originated in Kyoto when a
man named Usui- sensei discovered the ability whilst fasting
on Mt Kurama. Until the 1990s it was thought to have virtually died
out in Japan so it was lucky that I was able to discover that there
was an old woman and her son living in Kyoto who had started to
hold Jikiden Reiki seminars. Mrs Yamaguchi learned Reiki from Hayashi
sensei, one of 20 masters Usui- sensei (the original founder of
Reiki) created. She was just 17 when she learned and had been practising
Reiki for over 60 years when I nervously entered her small apartment
in the centre of Kyoto. On meeting Chiyoko Yamaguchi's warm smile
and humble, welcoming disposition, my nerves dissolved. I immediately
knew that this was the place and the people with whom I wanted to
study Reiki. It just felt right.

Jikiden Reiki is Reiki as it was before it left Japan and entered
the Western world many years ago. When Reiki finally returned to
Japan in the 1990s, there were many differences but I think the
main difference between the Japanese Jikiden Reiki and Western Reiki
is its simplicity. The emphasis is on treatment and experience and
participants learn the concept of byosen that is, being able
to feel an accumulation of toxins in the body indicating that Reiki
is needed in that particular area, so participants can find the
areas that most need Reiki and then rest their hands lightly on
the receiver and let the energy flow. It's that simple. There is
no ceremony or ritual, and the strength of energy I feel with Jikiden
Reiki coupled with its pure simplicity are what has made it feel
so right for me.
Mr Yamaguchi (Chiyoko Yamaguchi's son) teaches seminars in the
same style as Chiyoko Yamaguchi remembered Hayashi sensei teaching
in the 1930s. His humility, encouragement and ability to answer
any question about Reiki with an honest, gentle wisdom never fail
to inspire me. I have seen a great number of people recover from
various health problems through receiving treatments or learning
Jikiden Reiki and going on to self-treat. Recently, more and more
people in Japan are starting to realise that Reiki is a practical
treatment that is effective for those who want to use it in the
home to keep their children and family healthy, for those who just
want to stay healthy or for those who have clearly pronounced health
problems that they want to work on. There
is a spiritual element for those who are interested and the benefits
for people learning Reiki are incontrovertible.
Jikiden Reiki has had a profound effect on all areas of my life.
Although I am still amazed at the effectiveness of Reiki, I think
I am finally coming to accept what would have seemed like miracles
to me a few years ago as the expected norm.
