Mevis and Van Deursen

Thru May 24

Armand Mevis and Linda Van Deursen of MEVIS + VAN DEURSEN have played a critical role in modernizing Dutch graphic design and redefining it as a dynamic medium. Having met as art students at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, Armand Mevis and Linda Van Deursen set up a graphic design studio after graduating. They have since combined cultural commissi-ons from the Stedelijk Museum of Modern Art and Muziektheater, both in Amsterdam, with public sector projects such as stamps for the Dutch Post Office. Diversity is a central theme in their work. When devising an identity for Rotterdam as European Capital of Culture in 2001, they rejected the conventional solution of choosing a particular symbol in favor of celebrating the eclecticism of the city in multiple combinations of circles, squares and other symbols.

Photos of Cuban everyday life

May 4-9

eil Klein is an American photographer that has been living in Kyoto since 2001. He has traveled to approximately 30 countries and has enjoyed experiencing and photographing the diversity of cultures our world has to offer. The images in this exhibit represent an outsiders view of everyday life (fleeting moments) of the Cuban people. He finds he is most expressive through photos and hopes the viewer comes away with a better sense of the people and culture depicted.
Neil received his undergraduate degree in photography from California College of Arts and Crafts in 1995 (his junior year was spent at Goldsmiths College, University of London). He has exhibited in the United States, England and Japan and has been published in magazines and photo annuals. He also holds a teaching certificate for high school photography and art. Neil
will be present on Sunday May 8 from 2pm until closing.

Mysteries of the human body

Thru May 22

The human specimen has always belonged to the world of medical science, more specifically to anatomy, which sounds difficult and technical. However in this project, human specimens are exhibited for the public and we can learn more about humans, life, body and health through the interesting displays. The brand-new technology called “plastomic” allowes us to produce a revolutionary human specimen that can be preserved semi-permanently even at ordinary temperature. They are odorless, flexible and touchable. Feel free
to visit and observe the mystery of the human body. It will also help you to understand the doctor's diagnosis when you consult one.

Shaping the sacred
Apr. 2 - May 8

People's lives have gone through changes through the ages, from distant times of hunting and gathering to provide daily necessities, to the age of prospering agricultural efforts, to the beginning of trade and the creation of a glittering civilization. Throughout the ages, people have manifested their feelings of awe and reverence for the incomprehensible workings of fate and nature in a variety of physical forms. This exhibition features a selection of works drawn from the Miho's holdings in ancient Egyptian, West Asian, Central Asian, Chinese, Japanese and Ancient American arts, as it examines how people have “shaped the sacred” through-out various regions and times. Many works included in the exhibition are on public display for the first time. All of the works will contribute to this experiment in grasping humanity's thoughts on forms of existence beyond their own.
