Asako Tanaka Exhibition

Sep 3 - Oct 1

Artist Asako Tanaka, known for works that are dynamic, refreshing and fun, while also challenging and engaging the viewer, will be holding an exhibition at Nomart Project Space in Osaka. Her works focus on objects from our everyday lives such as plates, milk, pencils and crayons and present them in a new way to change the way we perceive them. They play against our ingrained meaning of the object, causing us to misinterpret them. When looking at her works you immediately know something is not quite right, even though you can't figure it out right away. In this way her works are disturbing in a fresh, fun way. In this exhibition she will be presenting her work as black and white and color photographs. For a chance to speak with Ms. Tanaka and discuss her works stop by Nomart Project Space on the opening day, September 3rd, at 5pm.

Tales of Ise

Sep 3 - 25

Two exhibitions will be put on by Ashiya City Museum during September. One is the best selection of the museum, which features many never-seen items locked away in the museum's vault. The second features Tales of Ise — the first such exhibition was held five years ago. This will be the third time in which the Ashiya Museum will exhibit works relating to the Tales if Ise. This anonymous loose collection of poems with brief prose prefaces is the oldest work in the uta monogatari genre that it esta-blished. Although it almost entirely comprises waka (traditional Japanese short poems), the prose vignettes that serve to contextualize the poetic exchanges can be seen as precursors to the later literary works of Heian nobles. This collection, already a classic at the height of the Heian period (794-1185), has been immensely influential for the development of Japanese literature. Evidence is easily found in the frequent allusions to its waka, both in fictional works and personal diaries. It is not an exaggeration to say that together with Kokinshu, the imperially commissioned anthology of 905, Ise monogatari has formed the requisite cultural and literary foundation for genera-tions of aristocrats, and has served as the arbiter of taste for centuries. Over 20 handicrafts, drawings, picture books, etc. will be on display.

Well aware of the aesthetics of his time, Cocteau created his own world of poetry and worked on other fields such as novels, ballet, movies, theater, and art. This exhibition will show 280 pieces of works inclu-ding oil paintings, sketches, illustrations, jewelry, ceramics, tapestry, and books that describes the exchange beween Cocteau and Daigaku Horiguchi who introduced Cocteau's works to Japan.

Mizukoshi Shonan Exhibition

Sep 10 - Oct 23

Mizukoshi Shonan was born in 1888 in Kobe city. Shonan knew he want to pursue the arts so he went to study under Tanigu-chi Kyo at the Kyoto Municipal Fine Arts and Technical School and the present Kyoto University of Arts afterwards. At this time having some doubts in realistic princi-ple, he was influenced by Tomioka Tessa and other post impressionists. When the South Japan School of Chinese Painting was formed by young artists in Kyoto in 1921, Shonan participated in this organiza-tion until its dissolution in 1936. He recei-ved the Andre Malraux Award for his work titled Makeup and his 15th work Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained received high appraisal from Jean Cocteau. His wild strokes that didn't follow any form were taken in by many in the art world. Even after the war, he did not join any art organizations, although he continued to exhibit his work at the International Japan Art Exhibition. He formed the South Japan School of Chinese Brush Painting and continued until the end to teach and guide young artists. This exhi-bition is the first private exhibition of Shonan commemorating the 20th anniversary of his death and will exhibit over 80 of his works.
