Reading & Discussion
by Donald Richie
KYOTO Nov. 10th
Kyoto bookstore, Green e Books presents a reading
and discussion by Donald Richie, the foremost authority on Japanese
culture and cinema. This acclaimed writer will read excerpts from
his latest books, The Japan Journals 1947-2004, A view from the
Chuo Line, and other stories. Having lived in Japan since 1947
and written over forty books, Richie has been described as 'an
outsider who writes as in insider' for the subtle way he portrays
his adopted country.
The Chuo Line is a collection of twenty-seven
short stories. The characters are mainly Japanese who are set
in their ways but shown caught off guard by life. The Japan Journals
on the other hand is a work of nonfiction about the transformation
of Japan from post-war devastation to 21st century economic and
cultural powerhouse. This is a book spanning over fifty years
of Richie's work and is edited by Leza Lowitz. This long-time
observer of others who has helped define modern Japan and Japanese
culture for Western readers has opened his private journals, which
shows how he, too, along with Japan, has evolved for better and
for worse. Mr Richie will sign copies of both works.
