Jumbo Escape

Dec. 3 & 4

Four Shiga-ken artists, Sarah Hoitsma, J. Neil Lawley, Veronica Lussier, and Shannon Shea, will exhibit new work at Otsu Biwako Bunkakan. All four artists are working to integrate the experience of living in Japan with their previous art-making practices. Hoitsma and Lawley, both from Dallas, Texas, will show work with themes of nature and artifice, memory and loss. Lussier, from Winnipeg, Manitoba, has a BFA in Drawing and Video. Her sculpture deals with human connectivity across time, space, and culture. Shea, originally of Chico, California, holds a BFA in electronic media. Her work has addressed issues of femininity and identity. Her new work will draw on Japanese pop culture, specifically, purikura.

Alphonse Mucha: Treasures from the Mucha Foundation

Thru Jan 29

Alphonse Mucha was born in 1860 in Moravia, now part of the Czech Republic, but — his fierce patriotism notwithstanding — he was clearly a man of the world. Reflecting this, the works on display are arranged according to the various countries he resided in, starting with some early oil paintings and other works completed in Austria and Munich. Alphonse Mucha is synonymous with Art Nouveaux, which may help account for his popularity here in Japan. Since the opening of the Mucha Museum in Prague in 1988, the Mucha Foundation has collected an enormous number of his works from all over the world. This exhibition will feature posters, lithographs, accessories, oil paintings, statues and even photographs that Mucha took himself.

The Love of Football: Shimizu Kazuyoshi Photo Exhibition

Dec.17 - Jan.29

An authority on football photographs, this exhibition introduces the photogra-phic works of Shimizu as an intro for the 2006 World Cup Football tournament to be held in Germany. Photographs from Zico’s first year as a manager in Nove-mber of 2002 to the most recent Asian Qualifiers will be on display. Shimizu not only focuses on the play but on the mental part of the game, such as the intense stillness seconds before kick off as well as the passion of the suppor-ters and staff and the stadium itself. An avid fan himself, Shimizu has covered the last seven FIFA World Cups and is a renowned sports photographer in Japan.
