Qi Baishi and His Contemporaries

Thru Oct 1

Kyoto National Museum, Kyoto

Next year marks fifty years since the death of the modern Chinese painter Qi Baishi (1863-1957). In recent years, the works of this master artist, who introduced modern forms into the traditional Chinese literati painting scene, have annually been gaining recognition. Several editions of Baishi's complete works have already been published in China, attesting to his influence on modern Chinese painting. Baishi's finished works appear simple and easy to imitate, however, he created unusual and striking shapes in bold colors that have never been painted before. An element in his works interestingly connects to contemporary graphic art. The original sense of design in Baishi's paintings has gone unsurpassed.

This feature highlights several exceptional works by Baishi, produced during the 1920s and 1930s, when he lived in Beijing, from the collection of Suma Yakichiro, which was donated to the Kyoto National Museum in recent years. The exhibition explores his stylistic features and artistic achievements of his formative years. The works of his patron Yaohua and his favorite pupil, the priest Ruiguang, will also be exhibited to show how he influenced other artists.

Sarah Fujiwara Exhibition: Flow

Thru Oct 1

Mssohkan, Osaka

Sarah Fujiwara is irrefutably one of the most cutting-edge photoartists that the city of Tsushima (Aichi pref.) has ever produced.

Since her debut in 1996, a countless number of photo works have been included in the permanent collection of Kiyosato Photo Museum with honorable merits.

Despite coming from a commercial photo background, Fujiwara immediately found her place in the realm of artistic photography in which she demonstrates her amazing ability to instinctively clip out the best composition in a frame. It is her incredible sensitivity and perceptiveness that enable her to capture the most ordinary organic objects at their best moments, which would otherwise go unnoticed. And while the artist's foci derive from simply being a filter through which to deliver what is simply there, the motifs appear as though they are caught completely off-guard.

Ikisugitariya-Fast, Beautiful and Rhythmical

Thru Oct 29

Kirin Plaza Osaka, Osaka

Ushio Shinohara, the only Japanese Neo-Dadaist of the 1960s to remain committed to an esthetic of “repugnant beauty,” will hold an exhibition at Kirin Plaza Osaka. Shinohara, who goes by the nickname of “gyu-chan”, has lived in New York since 1967, yet cultural translocation influenced his subject matter only a little. His eyes remain fixed on an America of vitality and freedom, as seen from afar by a love-struck Japanese teenager of the immediate postwar period. He has always addressed the clash of old and new. Early paintings were full of pop imagery and celebrations of violence; being in New York only slightly increased the frenzy. Shinohara, at 74, continues to excite younger artists through his actions if not through his works, which remain fixed both stylistically and conceptually.
