SESSION DE AMIGOS

The nations of Brazil and Japan share several things in common (respective immigrants in each country; a deep, abiding love for Ronaldinho), which is why a Brazilian Film Festival in Japan is a no-brainer. This year's event features 20 Brazilian films (nine features and 11 shorts) in its 10-day running time, among them the Japan premiere of Olga (2004), a biographical film based on the true story of Olga Benario, a Communist militant in Moscow who began an affair with Brazilian revolutionary Luis Carlos Prestes.

This is only the second year of the event, but big things are being planned for the future; the 2008 Brazilian Film Festival will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the voyage of the Kasato Maru, the boat that would take the very first Japanese immigrants from Kobe to Brazil. (It's been estimated that 1.4 million Japanese and people of Japanese descent now live in Brazil.)

The festival runs from September 15 to 24, in the Tokyo International Forum in Toyko. Tickets are ¥1,300 in advance (available at any Ticket Pia location) and ¥1,500 the day of the events. (Special ¥1,000 discount tickets are also available.) For more information, please visit http://cinemabrasil.info
