A Pitch Black night

There is a well-known Spanish proverb that says, “The darkest time always comes before the dawn.” And this was exactly the case when Pitch Black, the New Zealand duo, Michael Hodgson and Paddy Free played at the open air club in Yamabikoen, Osaka on the 7th of July celebrating Tanabata night Playing live in Japan for the first time, they captivated the audience with their dubby acid rifts, minimal techno beats and stunning visuals. The New Zealand pair who met through a mutual friend in 1997, worked with keyboards, two Apple computers, samplers and other musical effecters. Whilst Paddy pounded the keyboard, Mike synchronized the sound to tweaked images of film noir and classic Star Wars cuts.

To start the deep vibe rub a dub dubbed the crowd into a hypnotic sway. Gazing upwards the visuals caught them and drew them into the world of Pitch Black.

Gradually as the beat picked up they were drawn deeper and deeper into the music until they were caught in its universe. There was nothing for them to do but dance. The bass pulsed through the mass of people lost in the unique sound. Ninety minutes later, no one was aware of the approaching dawn. Pitch Black had successfully completed what they had set out to do. Under their musical magic, the few hundreds or so people in the audience had been completely and utterly mesmerized by their live performance. It was a stunning display of musical mastery and I wondered why they weren’t better known here. Their first ever Japanese tour was, for me, a long awaited knockout.

After the show, KS chatted to Pitch Black.

KS: You two had met through mutual friend in 97, why did you decide to call yourselves Pitch Black?
PB: After we met I went into Paddies studio, we made a track and loved working with each other. We worked again on a new track and then were asked to play at a big festival called the Gathering. We had to have a band name. I had a studio called Pitch Black because there were no windows. So we decided to use the studio name. We also like it as it refers to both sound [as in] pitch and image black which is what we are, sound and image.

I understand you two are working as individuals as well, do you two meet up regularly working on music together?
We are both busy in our solo lives. But when we have projects like remixes or tours to do we get together to work. We are planning a new album so we have already spent a week up at a beach making new tunes. So really we have no real process but to make an album we work a lot together

How long did you two work on “Ape to Angels” albums and what is your favorite song in this album?
We had a few tracks that we had played live. Then we went to a beach for a week, this resulted in four new tracks. Then we worked for one month in a studio to finish it all off. So probably two months over a year to make. I like them all for different reasons ... so they are all my favorite

Did you enjoy the Japan tour? Did you get to see any interesting place in Japan?
Yes, yes, yes! We had the best time. Going to the temple out of Osaka was great. Also the public baths. We hope to come back early next year so we make an album now.

Since their beginnings in 1997, they have had a lot of well-earned publicity and praise within the New Zealand dance scene and have released three albums and three remix albums. Their third album, the award winning Half Way from Ape to Angel released in Japan in November 2005 contains 10 remixes “specifically chosen for the Japanese market” (Distributed by WAKYO Label. www.wakyo. jp/).
