Kobe Daimaru Museum

Actor and musician Yuzo Kayama, alias wakadaisho (meaning young admiral or boss) and jazz trumpeter Terumasa Hino are both known as people who play an active role as artists alongside their main careers. A joint exhibition of their artworks will be displayed in the Kansai for the first time. Over 100 of Kayama's works including paintings and in-glazes and over 150 of Hino's work will be on display.

58th Shosoin Exhibition

Nara National Museum

Each autumn, the annual Shosoin Exhibition here at the Nara National Museum brings the Tenpyo period back to life. This year's exhibition, the fifty-eighth of its kind, presents a total of sixty-eight pieces: thirteen treasures from the North Section, twenty-six from the Middle Section, twenty-six from the South Section, and three from Shogozo Buddhist manuscripts. Thirteen of these have never before been displayed. The Shosoin is the Imperial Repository, a seventh century building specially constructed to prevent natural damage caused by the humid Japanese climate. The repository contains numerous items from the Nara period that was considered worthy of preservation and many other priceless objects and pieces. This annual exhibition is a rare look at some of the pieces stored for hundreds of years.

Kyoto Ware: Ceramic Designs and Techniques of the Capital

Japan has several major sites of ceramic production, however, among these, Kyoto occupies a particularly important position. The tendency for expensive luxury items conforming to the demands of the wealthy, the level of decorativeness, and the amazing diversity that reflected various tastes and preferences perhaps can be said to represent features distinctive of the decorative arts made in the former capital of Japan.

This exhibition examines early Kyoyaki from its inception to modern Kyoto ceramic ware, which has been dramatically influenced and transformed by art nouveau, based on new findings and the latest research. Despite its relative late start as a site of ceramic production, Kyoyaki as the ceramic ware of the former capital greatly influenced the pottery of other regions in Japan. Explore the world of Kyoto's ceramic ware through the approximately 280 works that will be exhibited here.

Geometric Reality: Toshihiko KATO Exhibition

Kato has been pursuing his artistic career chiefly in the Kanto area creating numerous sculptures for both public as well as private spaces. These life-size sculptures are made from a computer drawing based on lengthy mathematical calculations, with every edge three-dimensionally transformed into triangles and squares. The dynamic postures of the works are merely an amalgamation of fragile paper pieces, all glued together over a two month period. The labor-intensive nature of his works is also a direct resistance against the computer-generated blueprints. Here, the spectators are presented with sheer structural stability rather than that of the material itself, which coincides with the Japanese philosophy of "in touch with nature" as exemplified by origami objects.
