Short Takes

Kyoto-based Swiss filmmaker Roger Walch, who won the Friendship Prize at last year's Aichi Expo Film Festival, will premiere three locally-shot short films about treachery, love and teahouses. (All three were written, directed and scored by Walch.)

The first film of the program is Teahouse of a Homeless Prince (Kyoto, 2006), a documentary about German artist Jan Klopfleisch, who set up a functioning cardboard teahouse next to Kamogawa River in Demachiyanagi, Kyoto.

The next film is Lost Island, shot last year in locations in and around Nagasaki. The story concerns Jun (Jun Bruderer-Kono), an expatriate who returns home to Japan after 10 years abroad. After visiting the grave of a childhood sweetheart (Yoshiko Matsuda), Jun begins to be literally haunted by the past.

The final film of the program is Yuwaku 3 (Kyoto, 2006), third in a trilogy about seduction in Japan. In the film, an English teacher (Nigel Randell) wanders into a mysterious bar in Kyoto, and into the arms of an overly-friendly local (Yoshiko Matsuda) with some fiendish tricks up her sleeve.

The program runs from 7:30pm to 10pm December 15th, at Shin-Puh-Kan Kyoto, 3rd floor (exit from Oike subway station). Ticket: ¥1,000 (w/1 drink).
