One of the founders of Detroit techno and a frequent flyer to Japan, Derrick May is making
his last trip to Kansai of 2006. Derrick started producing tracks in the mid 80s and together
with his high school mates Juan Atkins and Kevin Sunderson became known as the Belleville
Three and were the leaders of the scene. Along with numerous productions, his
biggest hit 'Strings of Life' released almost two decades ago, is still the killer track now that
it was back then, with continual play by both techno and house DJs. An amazing producer
and DJ, Derrick is also the owner of the very influential label Transmat which has released
countless records by the likes of Darryick May (under his alias Rhythm is Rhythm), Carl
Craig, Suburban Knight, Joey Beltram, and Kenny Larkin. A must-see for techno lovers.
Just ahead of his first set in Osaka, KS caught up with German DJ Timo Maas, the musical mastermind
behind such hits as 'Get Down', 'Help Me' and 'It's The First Day', and met a man who is
charismatic and engaging in real life as the music he creates and spins for the dance floor.
TM: At the end of the day it is about DJing really.
It is also about having great parties with people
keeping the memories, and being supported by
my production side with remixing and all of that
stuff, but it also comes down to loving my job –
and playing my long sets which is the thing I love
the most!
I grew up with that kind of thing. When I was
starting and playing my first club nights, the
DJ was playing for the whole night not just for
two hours, it was an experience – like the whole
Friday night or the whole Saturday night. So
seven or eight hours - I am used to it!
I take one record box. Preparation for a set is
always happening at home really. A lot of time
I prepare only one record box because it is much
easier to travel with and I mainly play vinyl.
I just spend a lot of time at home to prepare
properly so I can play up to 10 hours out of this
one box because I know every record in there,
and that gives me a lot of freedom.
You first broke through in the UK, gaining
popularity in that market before Germany,
your own country. How was this beneficial
for you?
The UK was the key market that made all the
other markets aware of what I am doing.
Germany is good for me, but it is not my most
successful market. I am never really playing in
Germany. Although, I am starting a new residency
in February in Berlin at the new Tresor, which
has now relocated to an old power plant in the
middle of Berlin.
On your two artist albums Loud and Pictures,
you worked with some of the world's biggest
recording artists such as Kelis and Placebo's
Brian Molko. Have you had to deal with any
egos and hissey fits?
Every experience I have had is that when I am
working with an artist, we are working on a
project together. I have never had a problem
with their etiquette. When I was recording for
Loud with Finley Quaye, the record company
warned us before and said 'When he is coming
over to Hanover, be careful. He just freaked out
here in London and destroyed a complete recording
studio. He caused thousands of pounds
in damage.' My recording partner Martin
(Butterich) and I just looked at each other and
said 'Damn!' So we actually got him really
stoned and had the best time of our lives.
In 2003 you received a Grammy nomination
for a remix of Tori Amos's 'Don't Make Me
Come To Vegas'. What did that mean to you?
That meant I was actually there and I was very
excited - very excited! In the scene it is a sign
that you work with a certain quality. To reach
a Grammy Nomination as a DJ, which is what
I am in the deep of my heart, is pretty impressive.
I was very impressed.
Kicking everybody's ass on one of the most
amazing sound systems. That's it!

The young producer/DJ and singer, Rasmus Faber hails from Sweden and is coming to
