The Really Big Screen

Space constraints - financial ones too, probably - have thus far prevented Kansai from enjoying the super-massive cinema complexes like the ones abroad. Compared to, say, Sydney's Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace, or L A's Grauman's Chinese Theatre, local theaters aren't quite as opulent or half the size; as the common complaint goes, even after movies like The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King or X-Men 3 finally make it to Japan, the (relatively) tiny local screens just don't do them justice. There is, however, a big screen - a really big screen, actually - to be found in Kansai, in the guise of the Suntory Museum IMAX Theater. The IMAX format has received a great deal of attention of late due to the quite-astonishing 3D imagery the format is able to project. A very good showcase for this is Blue Oceans II, playing at the Suntory IMAX through March 31. The film is a feast of 3D footage taken from, well, lots of blue oceans, and an eye-popping showcase of technology miles ahead of the old cardboard cutout glasses. Admission is ¥1,000 for adults, ¥700 for senior citizens, and high school and university students, and ¥500 for children.
