World Comic Exhibition

Kyoto International Manga Museum, Kyoto

The Kyoto International Manga Museum opened this November. The Museum aims to undertake research and studies concerning manga culture. In this event, more than 1,000 copies of comics in Western and Asian countries are on display. You can also read Japanese comics translated into a number of different languages. This exhibition has a long history and has been held six times in 10 years. You can see a selection of notable exhibits from previous exhibitions, which combine to create a graphic history of the event.

Bergamo Donizetti Theater - Anna Bolena

Biwako Hall, Shiga

Anna Bolena is the work that made Bergamo Donizetti's name. It was not popular until Maria Callas sang it in Teatro alla Scala in despite being first performed in the 1870s. In Japan, it has not played since 1982 and this will be only the second time. The reason why the number of performance's is few is the part of heroine Anna is very challenging. The soprano in this production is Dimitra Theodossiou who is widely regarded as a second Maria Callas. The work is also notable for a 20-minute aria in the last scene.

Osaka Municipal Fire Department
- Dezome-shiki

ATC O's Park, Osaka

This is a good chance to see the Osaka fire department honing its disaster preparedness for the new year. Land- based, airborne and waterborne fire fighting units will come together to show off their abilities. There will be a parade by the fire department music band, fire engines, fire fighters. There will also be demonstrations of rescue drills using a high building, and fire extinguishing techniques. You will be able to see fire engines really close, experience a magnitude 7 in a simulator, and ride a miniature fire engine.

Imada Minako Elegant World Exhibiton Fantasy of Sweets and Table

Daimaru Museum Kobe, Hyogo

Minako Imada is a leading food researcher. She not only brings the art of European sweet and pastry making but also reproduces the table settings of noble ladies European courts. The base of her activities, Imada Minako Table Art Salon will celebrate its 30th anniversary, so artistic food and gorgeous table settings lead you into a dreamy world. About 110 works are exhibited including thea recreation of the table at the wedding of Marie Antoinette d'Autriche and Louis XVI, Versailles Palace. The elaborate decorations create a fantasy of a luxurious life.

The 32nd Gafu Exhibition

Miyako Messe, Kyoto

The number of bonsai collected by fans from around the country has been increasing every year and has reached about 1,200. Many bonsai by celebrities are on display. This event has become famed as a New Year's event in Kyoto, and attracts visitors from all over Japan.

New year's Kite Flying Festivals

Shoutoku Junior High School in Higashi-oumi City, Shiga

You can bring a kite or buy one at the event. The first two hundred people to arrive can take part in the drawing of a New Year's gift, game events and have miso soup with pork and vegetables. A huge kite whose size is 20 tatami mats will fly by the Youkaichi Big Kite Preservation Association.

New Year Concert 2007 - Viennese Waltz with Melanie Holiday

Vienna Opera Orchestra is very famous for the orchestra playing in a well-known ball, Operaball, held in Vienna National Theater in February. Just six dancers will accompany the orchestra on this outing. The queen of Operetta, Melanie Holiday will perform.

Pirates of the Dotombori Improv Comedy

The Balabushka in Shinsaibashi

A short-form improv comedy group (think "Who's Line Is It Anyway?") with members from the USA, Canada, UK, New Zealand, and China. No script, no plot, but with random suggestions from the audience, the Pirates bring plenty of laughs with a form of comedy you have to see to believe. Though the shows are in English, topics relating to life in Japan frequently spring up, and Japanese attendees have enjoyed past shows immensely.
