The next generation is now

Scourge of the Seven Seas

Two important dates this year in China: January 30, the date when Casino Royale became the very uncut and uncensored James Bond film to open on the mainland for moviegoers; and January 1 (give or take a week), when Casino Royale became available for purchase on dirt-cheap, pirated VCD. It goes without saying that film piracy is a huge problem throughout Asia - a DVDburning lab in Aichi was shuttered just last January, and a 2004 report from the MPA (Motion Pictures Association) estimated $896 million in lost revenue.

Though there are fairly strict laws in places to deal with the rampant spread of film piracy in Japan, pirates remain unfettered (a trip to Shinsaibashi on any given night will net you at least one encounter with someone selling ¥1,000 copies of newly-released movies). The MPA's Save Our Movies campaign, featuring public service announcements before every film shown in local theaters, is much less benign these days (an earlier, rather unsettling ad featured a young women crying black tears before morphing into a skull), though it is no less serious. "The threat of continued wholesale theft of intellectual property persists in the Asia-Pacific region," the organization notes.
