Thrilling Heroics

The cinematic onslaught of Spider-Men and Hulks and Ghost Riders from American shores begs the question – who, and where, are the local Japanese equivalents?

There are oodles in the annals of animated superherodom, of course: musclebound heroes with terrible hairdos like Son Goku (Dragonball) and Kenshiro (Hokuto no Ken), for example, have been kicking butt in rental shops for decades. Live-action action heroes are always close behind: there are the color-coordinated Power Rangers, of course, as well as giant monster-smashing Ultraman (last seen in 2006's Ultraman Mebius and Ultra Brothers). Casshern is certainly worth a look, as well – as much for its robotchopping, undead superhero as for the extraordinary, Fritz Lang-style visuals (to say nothing of the really nice Utada Hikaru song over the end credits).

In a different vein is last year's pair of not-particularly -good Death Note movies, featuring an antihero who uses the world's scariest notebook to summon a villain-offing Grim Reaper (albeit one with spiky hair and '90s-Goth clothing). As for the women? Unfortunately, local superheroines have had about as much luck retaining their dignity as their American counterparts: clothing-allergic, panty-flashing crime-fighter Cutie Honey may strike plenty of blows for justice, though not so many for feminism.
