Planning your future
With Joesph J Dwyer, IFG-ASIA

All your base are belong to us (Redux)

Or, how does one translate "Once upon a time …" into working Japanese?

Tricky business, English- to-Japanese translation, particularly in the film world. In many cases, according to translators and localizers, the direct translation may not always the best one; thus does Robert Rodriguez's 2003 shoot-'em-up Once Upon a Time in Mexico become the less operatic-sounding Legend of Mexico after hitting local shores.

"There are ritualistic expressions that just cannot be translated into English and vice versa: 'itadakimasu,' 'God bless you,' usage of the word 'sorry.' Capcom producer and localizer Ben Judd told the online Escapist magazine last year.

Case in point: swear words. Though the Japanese has its fair share of "blue" language, certain English phrases are indeed lost in translation: believe us, "I've had it with these motherfucking snakes on this motherfucking plane!" (taken from Samuel L Jackson's Snakes on a Plane; sorry Snake Flight) has nowhere near the verve in Japanese that it does in the original audio.

Rocky the Final (Rocky Balboa), Bad Boys 2 Bad (Bad Boys II) and Prada wo Kita Akuma (The Satan- Demon Wore Prada, as it were) may not sound so great as movie titles, but at least you know that some movie studio localizer, some- where, gave it their best shot.
