Hachimanbori Matsuri

Omihachiman, Shiga

This area of Omihachiman city has the classical atmosphere of an old merchant town. Hachimanbori is the street that is lit up with five hundred lights made of bamboo during the event. (Light up is held on 15th, 16th, 17th) the aerial cableway is open during the event and you can enjoy a fantastic night view from Hachiman mountain. Some musicians will have concerts on 8th and 9th in front of Kawara Museum. An old sake factory and a number of venerable mansions are open for visitors, and if you wear Japanese style clothes, for example, Kimono or Yukata, you get a special benefit from the museums and mansions.

Choyo Seasonal Festival

Tondaya, Kyoto

This festival is also called the Chrysanthemum Festival. Many Japanese culture and customs have been influenced by Chinese culture. The 9th day of the 9th lunar month is the Double Ninth Festival because nine is an auspi- cious number in Chinese tradition. The Double Ninth Festival is also a time when chrysanthemums bloom. Chrysanthemums are respected as the imperial emblem and also admired as a symbol of longevity, majesty and holiness so enjoying the flourishing chrysanthemums is the central activity in this festival. You can enjoy the story about this chrysanthemum festival and other traditional events related to this festival while having lunch.

Biwako Biennale 2007

The third Biwako Biennale will combine artistic work and a sense of the importance of location in an exciting event designed to help us all appreciate the indigenous culture and climate of Lake Biwa, Shiga — a lake significant for its natural beauty and its place in history as much as for being an important source of water. Biwako Biennale takes place amidst the beautiful landscape surrounding Lake Biwa, located in the center of Omi Hachiman. At Biwako Biennale 2007 you will be introduced to the idea of Spirit of Place: Genius Loci. The term can refer to the distinctive aspects and characteristics of a particular place, or to an ancient spirit that inhabits and protects a place, or even to an invisible place that exists only in the mind. During this event, there will be some exhibitions and concerts in Omihachiman. Kawara museum, Nishikatsu Shuzou, Shuyu kan, Kanekichi mansion, Kitari mansion.

Japan and Russia fraternization concert

Expo Park, Osaka

There is to be a performance of classical music in front of Tekkokan in Expo Park. The International Music Exchange Association sets up more than ten free classical music concerts every year all over Japan. The organization says that there is little chance to listen to the professional music played in Japan and there are few professional musicians in Japan, even though it is said that there are plenty of musical instruments available compared with other countries. You might not be a person who wants to be a professional musician, but you can enjoy listening to live classical music free!

Choyo Seasonal Festival

Hourin ji temple, Kyoto

There is an old tale about statue of a boy in this temple. The boy drank a drop from a chrysanthemum and he lived for seven hundred years. Now we drink chrysanthemum sake to protect us from misfortune.

Choyo Matsuri

Kamigamo shrine, Kyoto

One of the biggest five seasonal festivals in Japan is Choyo no Sekku on September 9th. Others are 7th June, 3rd March, 5th May, 7th July. On these days, children do sumo in the shrine and the chief of the shrine imitates bird voices and jumps around holding arrows.

Hojo Ceremony

Honnoji temple, Kyoto

This is a ceremony, which takes place in Honnoji temple to give thanks for life creature and have a memorial ceremony. A live fish is offered at the main hall and there is a special ritual. After the ritual the fish will be released into the Kamo River from Sanjo Bridge.

Fiesta Mexicana e no gyaku

Umeda Sky Building, Osaka

You will find tacos and many other Mexican dishes as well as drinks like tequila sold in booths. On the stage you can watch Estudi- antina La Salle and La Bamba. They wear traditional costumes and play guitars and mandolins. This is the tenth anniversary of the event.

Osunafumi Ceremony

Imakumano Kannon ji temple, Kyoto

Visitors wear special costumes and step in pallets filled with sand to symbolise a pilgri- mage to 88 significant places in Shikoku, which confers as much grace as visiting the actual locations.

Kyoto Arashiyama Music Festival

Many kinds of concerts, Hawaiian music, classical music and jazz take place in Arashiyama’s Nakanoshima park and Nonomiya shrine. Recently a hot spring was discovered there.

Moon Viewing Festival

Shimogamo jinjya shrine, Kyoto

Traditional dance music and koto music will be performed. The players wear gorgeous Heian-period costumes. There will be a beautiful full moon called jyu- goya in the autumn sky. There are many events to enjoy moon viewing in other places in Japan.
