The Red Raft Series by Rachel Tooth

Oct 1 - 13

Inspiblo Gallery, Kyoto

Rachel Tooth is an Australian born Illustrator and Landscape Architect who has exhibited both in solo and groups shows in Australia This is the first occasion in which Rachel's work has been part of an international exhibition. The Red Raft Series is a collection of mixed media works and drawings on paper and wood, which is inhabited by a surrealist array of objects and characters imbued with symbolism and themes of traveling, beginnings, destinations and the evolution of the self. Astronauts float above rivers in which pink lambs swim, rivers burst forth from monks ears as they meditate and tree branches turn into taps from which insects and a jumble of letters flow. Viewers are invited to explore the current of potent characters and symbols and create their own interpretation and narrative.

Kyoto National Museum, Kyoto

Patronized by the warlords Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the celebrated painter Kano Eitoku (1543– 1590) was one of the most highly sought-after artists of his time. His standing screen, sliding door, wall and ceiling paintings decorated Oda Nobunaga's Azuchi Castle and Hideyoshi's residence in Kyoto and Osaka castle. One of the most prominent patriarchs of the Kano School of Japanese painting, he developed the "monumental style", characterized by bold, rapid brush-work, an emphasis on foreground, and motifs that are large relative to pictorial space.

Handweaving & Natural Dyeing Textile Works

Oct 27- Nov 4

Joyusya Café, Naramachi, Nara

Inspired by nature and its creation, these two young Japanese artists - Yoshimi Ando and Yoko Sakamoto will be putting on their first exhibition of this series in a cozy and arty-style cafécum- art gallery in one of the beautiful traditional houses in Naramachi. The works feature the textiles created with different hand-weaving techniques (both traditional Japanese and the contemporary experimental methods) and the accessories produce it. The natural dyeing section shows the range of natural colors produced from onion skins, madder, mints, herbs, wood chips, indigo and so on. There will also be a range of hand-produced scarves, stoles, bags, tablemats, and tapestries on display. The artists are hoping to reflect the harmony with nature through their creations.
