Taikichi Irie and Literary Figures Who Loved Nara

Dec 24

Irie Taikichi Memorial Museum of Photography, Nara

Irie Taikichi was born in Nara where he remained throughout his life to continue taking photos of Buddha portraits, cultural products and Nara scenery until his death in 1992. After World War II, he walked around the streets of Nara with his camera, even turning down a lucrative offer to take photos of China's Xian, saying the trip would take away his time from taking photos of his beloved city. All his works are regarded as masterpieces created through his severely selective eyes. His works are so remarkable that they are said to have reshaped the Japanese view of Nara. Today many Japanese view Nara from his points of view. This exhibition features the photographer's color and monochrome photos that are interpretations of words from authors Tetsuro Watsuji, Naoya Shiga and Yaichi Aizu of Yamato literature.

Blue and White Porcelain of Joseon Dynasty

Dec 24

The Koryo Museum, Kyoto

Blue and white porcelain were developed in China during the Yuan Dynasty. Its production and technology then moved on into Japan, southeast Asia and even parts of Europe. In Korea, porcelain ware shifted from Celadon porcelain with ironpainted ornamentation and inlay decoration to Bun-Chung porcelain that uses such techniques as sgraffito, brush marks and speckled straw-ash glaze but blue and white porcelain made from cobalt oxide colors were hard to come by and Korea mostly depe- nded on imports from China. Blue and white porcelain ware was and is widely considered to express warmth and sensitivity. During the Joseon Dynasty, production of cobalt became easier, increasing production, and blue and white porcelain became a standard fixture among the people. This exhibition will feature blue and white porcelain produced at the end of the Joseon Dynasty that lasted 518 years.
