Summer fun, havin' a blast

However long it ends up lasting, the writer's strike begun last month in Holly- wood will have little effect on the big summer block- busters of 2008, already in the can and waiting to suck ¥1,800 out of your pocket.

A small preview: undeterred by the general ill will towards lackluster fare like Ghost Rider and Spider-Man 3, 2008 sees Hollywood pressing ahead with a raft of comic book movies. Trouble actor Robert Downey Jr. will become troubled billionaire Tony Stark in next year's adapta- tion of Iron Man, while Edward Norton and Christian Bale fight evil as the titular characters in The Incredible Hulk and The Dark Knight (that's Batman), respectively.

Be on the lookout, also, for new efforts from Pixar (Wall-E, about a lonely robot on a desolate Earth in the future), the Wachowski brothers (a live-action Speed Racer), Tom Cruise (the World War II drama Valkryie, about a plot to assassinate Hitler), Will Smith (the superhero action/drama Tonight, He Comes), as well as a pair of 80s retreads (John Rambo, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull) that'll give ample opportunity to, if nothing else, compare whether Sylvester Stallone really has aged better than Harrison Ford.
