Getting the joke

Though, for many, the lightning-fast repartee and grammatically incorrect language of two-person manzai comedy put perfect understanding out of reach, Japanese-language students may find the simpler (or maybe just simplistic) jokes in TV laffers and cinematic comedies much easier to understand (and all avail- able on study-friendly DVD).

Happy Flight director Shinobu Yaguchi's visits to two unheralded high school clubs (boys' - boys' - synchronized swimming in Water Boys; an all-girl swing band in Swing Girls) were stuffed with easy laughs; this summer's third season of Yukie Nakama's yakuza-turned-high school teacher dramedy Gokusen again showed off Nakama's deft comic touch (recycled plotlines aside).

For older fare, comedy fans can seek out comedian Nishida Toshiyuki's series Tsuribaka Nishi (Diary of a Crazy Fisherman); the sketch comedy of legendary funnyman Ken Shimura (brilliant at playing old people, decades before he became an old person himself); or Kiyoshi Atsumi's Otoko wa Tsurai Yo (It's Tough Being a Man) series (so popular that Atsumi - in the guise of Tora-san, the series' hero - has a bronze statue in Tokyo.

You might not get all the jokes, but some things (loudmouthed jackasses making fools of themselves in front of women, for instance) are easy to under- stand, in any language.
