Golden - Ai Sasaki Exhibition

Thru Feb 8

Graf Media GM, Osaka

Born and raised in Osaka, Ai Sasaki is interested in the way in which our daily surroundings are informed by things invisible to the naked eye such as air, time, temperature, and energy. Through her works, she wants to momentarily preserve those landscapes that cannot be seen. She has had numerous exhi- bitions outside Japan and from these experiences she wanted to express things she saw, such as the land and scenery and other naturalistic things in the form of drawings and paintings. The title Golden is the power she felt from the mountain and forests she saw in New Zealand while on a Wellington Asia Residency Exchange program.

Korean Arts and Crafts: The Pattern of Good Omens

Jan 6–Mar 29

Koryo Museum, Kyoto

Animals and plants such as cranes, wild boars and peonies symbolize long life, wealth and honor in Korean culture. The kanji characters for Kissho represent health and double happi- ness, and these are thought of as art or as a part of Korean design. Among those, bats and magpies were respected in design and were included in a lot of ceramic ware and furniture. The sound of these words echoed good fortune in ancient China and Korea. Many of the displays at this exhibit will feature works with these designs and showcase many of the ancient Korean crafts that feature these lucky omens.
