Treasures of the Habsburg Monarchy

JAN 6-MAR 14

Kyoto National Museum

2009 marked the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In commemoration, this exhibition traces the splendor of the Habsburg Family, who ruled Europe for over six hundred years and was famous for their love of fine art. This exhibition will feature over one hundred works of painting, decorative art and armor from the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna and the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest. About fifty-two artists will be featured including the court painter to the Hapsburgs, Durer, and other artists such as Raffaello, El Greco, Goya and Cranach. Featured for the first time in Japan are some ukiyoe and maki-e paintings, which were gifts from the Meiji Emperor to Franz Joseph I.

Jan 6-Mar 14, 9:30am–6pm, closed Mon (except Jan 11), ¥1,500/¥1,000/¥500. Nearest stn: Hakubutsukanmae bus stop. Tel: 075-525-2473.

Leonard Foujita Exhibition

JAN 8-JAN 28

Kobe Daimaru Museum

Born in Tokyo in 1886, Leonard Tsuguharu Foujita received formal training at the Imperial School of Fine Arts, where he excelled so much that he was commissioned to paint a portrait of the Emperor of Korea. Subsequently, in 1911, Japan’s Emperor Meji even purchased one of his paintings. At the age of 27 he traveled to Paris, meeting and becoming close friends with other masters of that time such as Picasso, Rivera, Cocteau, and Modigliani, who he was especially close to. Foujita successfully blended traditional Japanese art with European Modernism, and is regarded stylistically as a lightweight, decorative artist both inventive and experimental. An example of this is his invention of a unique blend of crushed oyster shell and color to produce the milky skin tones seen in his nude portraits.

10am-7:30pm, ¥1,000/¥800/¥500. Nearest stn: Motoachi (Daimaru Dept Store 9F). Tel: 078-331-8121.

The Tigers of Korea and Japan

JAN 9-FEB 14

Koryo Museum (Korai Museum)

The Amur (Korean) tiger has enjoyed widespread popularity in Korean art and literature and is often depicted in folk tales and industrial art works. The belief that tigers hold the incantatory power of repelling evil spirits promoted mass production of folk-style tiger paintings. Historically, for Japanese, the tiger was considered a mysterious animal, since none are found in the country. Ito Jakuchu, the eccentric Edo period art master famous for his depictions of birds, was also drawn to the tiger, creating several paintings and tapestries of the big cat. This exhibition will focus on how tigers affected the lives of the Korean and Japanese people, and how differently they are represented in the two countries.

10am-5pm, closed Mon. ¥800/¥600. Kamogawa Chugakkomae bus stop.

Northern Song Ru Ware – Recent Archaeological Findings

Thru MAR 28

The Museum of Oriental Ceramics, Osaka

For the first time, the archaeological findings from the kiln site of the Northern Song Ru ware at Quingliangsi Temple in Baofeng-xian, Henan Province, will be on display in Japan. Ru ware is a type of celadon pottery produced in the late Northern Song Dynasty (960-1126A.D.) for court use, and is well known for its distinctive “sky-blue” glaze and meticulous modeling. Northern Song Ru ware is highly regarded as one of the prominent achievements of Chinese Celadon pottery–and also one of the rarest: only a very small number of them have survived. Approximately eighty pieces selected from the excavated materials at the Qingliangsi Temple will be on display.

9:30am-5pm, closed Mon; closed Jan 12, Feb 12, Mar 23. ¥900/¥600. Nearest stn: Yodoyabashi. Tel: 06-6223-0055.
