Garden of Painting, Japanese Art of the ’00s

Until Apr 4

The National Museum of Art, Osaka

Since the early ‘90s and the rise of ‘Generation Zero’, new figurative painting has become the subject of great interest both in Japan and abroad. Most Japanese works take inspiration from pop culture, something denounced as marginal in the past, in the form of illustrations, picture books and manga. This exhibition focuses on 28 Japanese figurative artists including O Jun, Kobayashi Takanobu, Goto Yasuka, Sakamoto Natsuko, and Atsushi Tomoko showcasing roughly 200 works. Drawings by Nara Yoshitomo, famed for his pictures of young girls with incisive looks, and paintings by Kusama Yayoi, who has been exploring new frontiers in line drawing, will also be exhibited.

Open Tue-Thu and Sat 10am-5pm, closed Mon. ¥1,100 (adults)/¥500 (students). 4-2-55 Nakanoshima, Kita-ku, Osaka 530-0005. Tel: 06-6447-4680. Nearest stn: Watanabebashi. www.nmao.go.jp/english/home.html
