The Louvre Museum Exhibition: L’enfant dans les collections du Musee du Louvre

Jun 23 – Sep 23

The National Museum of Art Osaka (Kokuritsu Kokusai Bijutsukan)

Children are often portrayed in great artworks, but The Louvre Museum Exhibition takes this focus one step further to investigate how children inspire creation itself. The broad scope of this show encompasses art from ancient times up until the mid-19th century. Child mummies, ancient Greek sculptures, Oriental toys, and a slection of sketches and paintings by some of the great artists all feature among over 200 works that represent diverse genres and cultures unified by the apple of every parent’s eye, the child.

Charlotte Lybeer “Kingdom of Discovery”

Jun 3 – 27

Flanders Gallery, Osaka

Belgian photographer Charlotte Lybeer expresses her interest in the closed, capsular aspects of our society such as theme parks and airports. She refers to these controlled architectural zones as “micro-cocoons”—places where we seek escape from our capitalist society so permeated by chaos and disorder. Some of Lybeer’s past works include shots from a gated community in South Africa; an indoor beach complex in Berlin; and a resort in Florida.

In “Kingdom of Discovery,” Lybeer travels to China where capitalism, it would be fais to suggest, is a relatively young concept. Located in the city of Shenyang, “Holland Village” is a theme park, housing complex and urban greenhouse that was inspired by stereotypical scenery of the Netherlands. The artificially-reproduced landscape ironically brings to mind the “good old times” when there was less of a focus on materialism. 23 selected color photographs will be on display.

Getting there: Subway, Tanimachi line/Sennichimae line, Tanimachi 9-chome stn, or Kintetsu Uehonmachi stn. Osaka International House 3F • Open: 10am – 5pm closed Sun • Admission: Free 06-6773-8850

Memory of Cloth/Time of Thread: Japan-China Textile Art Exchange Exhibition

Jun 13 – Jul 5

Kyoto Art Center Gallery North, Gallery South, Kyoto

This exhibition features works from textile craftspeople from China and Japan who have created works focused on “Memory of Cloth.”

Interstingly, the event will be held in both countries, and the artworks will be displayed along with symposiums and talks.
The textile artists (five from Japan and four from China) who are participating in this event have all taken their daily lives into account and have created realistic works that tell stories of their lives. Textiles provide an interesting and revealing vantage point to look at any society, and by comparing the two country’s works, there is much to learn.

Getting there: Hankyu Kyoto line, Karasuma stn./Subway Shijo stn, exit #22
Open: 10am – 8pm • Admission: Free TEL: 075-213-1000

Travel with Artists

Small Bridge at Cagnes, South France
Kojima Zenzaburo

Thru June 7

Otani Memorial Art Museum Nishinomiya City, Hyogo

Travel literally means to physically move from one place to another, but how do artists perceive the topic and what were some of the reasons for their travels? Many of them went overseas to study about art and to explore new ideas and themes for their work, whilst others visited specific lands in order to create works associated with that particular place. This exhibition focuses on traveling artists, to examine how and when these particular paintings were drawn and in what sorts of circumstances they were created.

Getting there: Hanshin/Hankyu Koyoen stn. • Open: 10am – 5pm Closed Wed • Admission: ¥500/¥300 TEL: 0798-33-0164
