The World of Komura Settai — The Aesthetic Sense and Sensibility of an Unknown Virtuoso Painter

UNTIL Aug 29

Kiyomizu Sannenzaka Museum

A Saitama Prefecture-born Settai Komura (1887-1940) is an artist who worked on book design, illustration, prints and stage art from the Taisho (1912-1926) to the early Showa (1926-1989) periods. He was hired by an art magazine publisher from 1908 to 1910, and then by a well-known cosmetic company Shiseido from 1918 to 1923 where he worked on advertisements. Having learned nihonga (Japanese-style painting) at Tokyo School of Fine Arts (today’s Tokyo University of Art), he often used nihonga-like motifs in unique compositions using aerial views. His works ‘Willow Tree’ (c. 1924) and ‘Cherry Blossoms’ (1934) are good examples. This show offers a rare opportunity to enjoy around 80 works by Komura, who was quite prolific and popular in his time but is a rather unknown artist these days, including 50 hand-drawn paintings and illustrations. Lacquer ware, on which Komura’s illustrations are used, are also exhibited.

• Open: 10am-5pm, closed Mon, Tue • Admission: ¥500 • City bus from JR Kyoto stn • Tel: 075-532-4271 • www.sannenzaka-museum.co.jp

Tabaimo: Danmen

Jul 13-Sep 12

National Museum of Art, Osaka

Tabaimo (b. 1975) may be a unique name for an artist. It’s her nickname from childhood, which means “Tabata’s younger sister,” from her family name Tabata and the fact that she was the middle of three siblings. Born in Hyogo Prefecture, she studied at Kyoto University of Art and Design. Her graduation work, which took a form of video installation, already attracted attention. She also works in video installation today, for which she draws hundreds and thousands of paintings. Even though she scans these paintings into computers to produce moving images, her hand-drawn lines make viewers feel somewhat nostalgic. She is one of Japan’s most prominent young artists. Tabaimo’s solo exhibition, held in the Kansai region for the first time in seven years, brings together five new pieces and is a must-see.

• Open: 10am-5pm, (Fri till 7pm) closed Mon • Admission: ¥420 • Subway Higobashi stn • Tel: 06-6447-4680 • www.nmao.go.jp

Genealogy of the Figurine: from Dogu to Kaiyodo

Till Aug 29

Kyoto International Manga Museum

Figurines today, which are also referred to as figures in Japanese, are human body-shaped memorabilia, often made of plastic. Japanese figures are not just a part of anime culture anymore and they are now beginning to be valued in the world’s art scenes. In Japan, however, making figurines and adoring them didn’t start recently, and Kyoto International Manga Museum dates its roots back to dogu (clay dolls) in ancient Japan. The highlight of the show is an incredible collection of figurines by Kaiyodo, one of Japan’s leading figurine makers.
