Antique Hina Doll Exhibition

Mar 1-18

Shika Senbei Tobashi

Mar 20

Mt Wakakusa, Nara

To mark the opening of Mt. Wakakusa for spring, what is surely one of the wackiest competitions in Kansai will take place. Thousands of spectators perch themselves on the steep, smooth slopes of Mount Wakakusa to watch competitors throw shika senbei (a round, thin food for deer) in any manner they feel–and as far as possible. Any entrant that throws past the 30-meter mark receives a prize, while the person who throws the furthest becomes the new ‘Shika Senbei Tobashi Champion’. A trophy of deer horns is presented to the best tosser, but they’ll have to be good: the record to beat is currently a massive 74.55 meters! The first 1,000 people will be accepted as entrants, while to add to the fun there will be live music and performances throughout the day.

From 10am, ¥300. Tel: 07-4222-3626. Nearest stn: Nara, bus to Daibutsuden Kasugataishamae.

The Osaka Prefectural Police Brass Band will also perform, while a palanquin will be brought from nearby Imamiya Jinja by a group of volunteers wearing traditional Japanese armour. To ice the cake, there will even be a mini 4WD car race performed by robots!
