Listen up!

listen-upFor many schools, the 2014-15 academic year is ending and making way for the 2015-16 one to begin. You may be a new teacher in Japan about to embark on your first teaching role, or a more experienced expat changing jobs, schools, or classes. Perhaps you’ve decided to do a little language study yourself. If any of these scenarios ring true for you, then you might like to brush up on your classroom Japanese to either help you understand what your Japanese teacher is saying to you, or to assist you in getting any wayward kids into line. Start using the phrases below to help make classroom life a little easier.

Useful Expressions

Okay, let’s start. でははじめましょう。 De wa hajimemasho.
Please open to page (10). 10ページをあけてください。 Jyu pe-ji o akete kudasai.
Please be quiet. しずかにしてください。 Shizukani shite kudasai.
Please listen. きいてください。 Kiite kudasai.
I don’t understand. わかりません。 Wakarimasen.
Please speak more slowly. ゆっくりはなしてください。 Yukkuri hanashite kudasai.
What does that mean? それはどういういみですか? Sore wa dou iu imi desu ka?
Do you understand? わかりますか? Wakarimasuka?
Yes, I understand. はい、わかりました。 Hai, wakarimashita.
No, I don’t understand. いいえ、わかりません。 Iie, wakarimasen.
May I go to the bathroom? おてあらい(といれ)にいってもいいですか? Otearai (toire) ni itte mo ii desu ka
Let’s take a break. ちょっと、きゅけいしましょう。 Chotto kyukei shimasho.
Get into pairs please. ペアをくんでください。 Pea o kunde kudasai.
Excuse me, I have a question. すみません。しつもんがあります。 Sumimasen. Shitsumon ga arimasu.
How do you say ‘verb’ in Japanese? 「verb」はにほんごでなんといいますか? (verb) wa nihongo de nan to iimasu ka?
Say it all together. みんなで いってください。 Minna de itte kudasai.
Fine, good. いいです。 Ii desu.
Wrong. ちがいます。 Chigaimasu.
