Bonjour Monsieur Renoir; Renoir et Umehara – Joie de Peindre
Jan 24 - Mar 26¥1400
Abeno Harukas Art Museum
Ryuzaburo Umehara, highly regarded today as a master of Japanese Western painting, began indulging his affinity for European art at a young age. In 1908, at the age of 20, Umehara traveled to Paris to study European painting techniques, and moved to the south of France the following year to become a pupil of the great Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Upon returning to Japan, Umehara garnered fame for the many portraits, still lifes, and landscapes that he produced in France. He stood out for his fearless application of rich color and luxurious brushstrokes, as well as his incorporation of Japanese stylistic techniques such as Momoyama, Nanga, and Rinpa imagery. This multifaceted exhibition celebrates interactions between Eastern and Western compositional styles with 83 works from Umehara’s collection and numerous paintings by his close friends, including Renoir, Picasso, and Roualt.
