Shigeru Izumi “How to Make a Handsome Painting”
Jan 27 - Mar 26¥510
The Museum of Modern Art, Wakayama
Contemporary artist Shigeru Izumi has incorporated a variety of media into his works throughout his career, including oil painting, lithographs, etching, and silkscreen prints. He founded the avant-garde Democratic Artists’ Association with Ei-Q in 1951, and went on to win the Newcomer’s Award at the 1st Tokyo International Print Biennale in 1957. He then spent approximately a decade abroad in New York and Paris, where he expanded his practice from prints to oil paintings while continually submitting works to exhibitions in Japan and around the world. Izumi resumed printmaking after returning to Japan, manifesting a style that had evolved over time from poetic and fantastical scenes toward distinct geometric themes containing abstract and colorful forms. This exhibition introduces the alluring works of this postwar Kansai artist.
