Shiko Munakata “I’m Becoming Van Gogh”

Nov 19, 2016 - Jan 15, 2017

Spread the love

View the unparalleled works of one of Aomori’s most renowned painters and woodblock printmakers. Active during the Showa period, Shiko Munakata created vivid, primal portrayals of natural and religious imagery, interweaving stark black lines over primarily white backgrounds. He endeavored to imitate the works of Vincent Van Gogh, originally inspired by the Post-Impressionist painter’s Still Life: Vase with Five Flowers. Over years of dedicated practice, Munakata refined an original style rich with personality that earned him numerous international awards. This exhibition, held on the 16th floor of the Abeno Harukas building, traces the path of Munakata’s development from his early years of study to the end of his life. Visitors to the gallery are sure to experience a sense of novelty in his pieces that remains evident through modern times.
